How It Works

Step 1 - Identification

The first step is to identify bright girl students from poor families of daily wage earners, road-side vendors, masons, rickshaw pullers, rag pickers, etc with monthly income less than Rs. 15,000/-

  • The team visits the slums and juggi-joparis.
  • Our team visits Government Schools where normally children of economically deprived class study.
  • Team approaches the Principals of the schools. A nodal teacher is nominated by the school which gets associated with Gyan Jyoti.
  • In consultation, with Principals of the schools and nodal teachers a list of deserving bright poor girl students studying from 4th class to 11 th class is prepared.
  • Gyan Jyoti Team conducts a test and interviews and a merit list is prepared.
  • As per the sponsors available to support the girls, a cut off list is prepared with waiting list.
  • In slum areas where these girls reside, Gyan Jyoti team locates some social worker and designates her as Swemsevikas.
  • Appointed Swaemsevikas are our ears and eyes of Gyan Jyoti who keep a watchful eyes on the selected girls.
  • The appointed Swayamsevikas help to identify poor and bright girls.

Step 2 - Selection

The next step is the process to select bright girls purely based on merit.

  • From the identified list, applicants are invited.
  • The team scrutinizes and conducts tests.
  • Girls with 60% and above are shortlisted.
  • Interviews are conducted with the girl and her family to establish commitment to the program.
  • All selected girls are asked to open a bank account with the help of the trust.

Step 3 - Sponsorships

In this step, sponsorships are sought from existing and new sponsors for the shortlisted girls

  • Girls are allocated to the existing list of sponsors.
  • New sponsors are sought for the remaining girls.
  • Sponsors are duly notified along with Bank Account details of the girls.
  • The scholarship amount @ Rs.1500/- per quarter is deposited directly by the Sponsors in the Bank account of the girl. The total scholarship amount is Rs.6,000 per year. However, those sponsors, who prefer to give lump sump amount, can do the same by depositing in Gyan Jyoti Bank account. Then Gyan Jyoti deposits @Rs 1500/- per quarter in bank account of each girl
  • The academic year begins April 1st every year.

Step 4 - Follow Through

The final step is to follow through on the process and ensure the process adds value to the girls.

  • Gyaanjyoti  team ensure that scholarship amount is deposited by the sponsors well in time.
  • Trust members work also as mentors of different groups.
  • Seminars and talks are organized.
  • Quarterly Newsletter is sent to all the sponsors and other members of the family .
  • Periodically Girls are collected where they reside and motivational lectures are arranged.
  • We try to get familiar with families of the girls and help them in case of need. Treat them as members of extended Gyan Jyoti Family. During Corona all families were provided with ration etc.
  • On specific demands of associated schools benches and carpets were provided with the help of donations from our well wishers and sponsors.
  • Those girls who pass out after 12 th are given guidance and provided monetary help for continuation of studies.
  • We wish that our Gyan Girls become examples in in society and beacon of light house. After all -
